Preventative Medicine

Vaccinations, targeted deworming, and quality dental care are essential parts of your horse's health!

Vaccination: Current vaccination recommendations for Upstate South Carolina include yearly rabies booster and EEE/WEE/Tetanus/WNV vaccination every six months. Other vaccines may be recommended for horses that travel.

Fecal testing and Deworming: Targeted deworming can save you money and ensure you are treating your horse appropriately. Ask us how fecal testing can direct your deworming program!

Annual Dental Care: Palmetto Equine is happy to offer closely monitored sedation dentistry with our specialized power float. The power float increases safety and decreases sedation time by speeding the procedure. Sedation ensures the entire mouth can be examined and all the points and sharp edges can be addressed. In addition, Dr. Tracey's surgical training comes into play when infected teeth need to be removed.

 Yearly Recommendations for Horses:

  • Wellness Exam every 6 months

  • Dental examination every 6-12 months (depending on age and state of teeth)

  • Fecal Exam every 6 months

Annual dental care is important for horses of all ages and missing check ups can set up long term management issues like waves and hooks. These may cause difficulty eating and weight loss.

Why does my horse need Routine blood work?

Thanks to our in-house laboratory, Palmetto Equine Veterinary Services has the ability to provide results on the same day.  This allows us to detect early disease processes which can make treatments more effective and more affordable for our clients!

Complete Blood Count

A complete blood count, or CBC, allows the veterinarian to evaluate red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. This information helps us to diagnose anemia, dehydration, infection, potential cancers, indicate parasite overloads, immune-mediated disease, and indicate tick-borne diseases.

Serum Chemistry Panel

A chemistry panel reads the levels in your horses serum that are can be indicative of tissue damage, liver damage, kidney insufficiency, metabolic abnormalities, and electrolyte imbalance.
